Hurrah for the Brownshirts
Anyone who expected or hoped (or pretended to hope) a Brown leadership for
the Labour Party would in any way improve on Blair's leadership should
have been rudely awakened by the vote in ID cards. Brown cheerfully
supports ID cards, detention without trial and is hardly going to object
to the extensive use of "direct labour" and "contract" torture by the
Americans at Guantanamo and around the world.
And jellyfish have more backbone than the so-called Labour rebels. It is
time for a new workers' party.
(The headline is not original. The Guardian cartoonist beat me to it. It is a parody of the Daily Mail headline "Hurrah for the Blackshirts!" At the time the Daily Mail supported the British Union of Fascists. They have moved to the right since then.)
